Carnival
This year the city promotes the biggest popular party in the world, Carnaval, from February 12 to 16. There will be several pre-carnival events and the official closing will be on February 20, Saturday of Champions, with the parade on Passarela do Samba of the winning samba schools, a show of extraordinary beauty. Besides that, the awarding of the three best bandstands will bring joy and fun to the city's districts.
FRIDAY - February 12
CARNIVAL 2010 OPENING CEREMONY
The Mayor of Rio symbolically hands over the keys to the city of King Momo thus opening the Carnival festivities. The event also includes the Carnival King Momo, Queen and Princess.

Parade Order: Filhos da Águia, Inocentes da Caprichosos, Tijuquinha do Borel, Corações Unidos do CIEP, Infantes do Lins, Miúda da Cabuçu, Pimpolhos da Grande Rio, Ainda Existem Crianças Vila Kennedy, Herdeiros da Vila, Estrelinha da Mocidade, Mangueira do Amanhã, Império do Futuro, Aprendiz do Salgueiro, Mel do Futuro, Petizes da Penha, Golfinhos da Guanabara, Nova Geração do Estácio de Sá.

Traditional meeting place for Carnaval among the Cariocas, the Cinelandia Ball, founded in 1990 has since been one of the biggest street spectacles, welcoming over 60 thousand people during the five days of the event. Carnaval’s greatest idols perform on a stage set up in front of Rio’s Municipal Chamber. The public can dance and sing to famous by-gone Carnival songs by famous artists.
